The area to the west of London is very easy to travel to from abroad, the capital and the rest of the UK. The Chiltern Hills are close to London, with outstanding scenery. High Wycombe, the largest town in the Chilterns, lies north-west of London. The area around Buckinghamshire is dominated by the River Thames, so canal and leisure boat trips are available. Henley-on-Thames, home of the annual regatta, and Richmond-upon-Thames, are also served by London river boats.
The closest airport, London Heathrow Airport, is minutes to the east of Slough, west of Reading and Richmond, along the M4. For low cost airlines, Luton Airport offers cheap flights to many UK and European cities and is located around 60 miles to the north of Reading, off the M1.
Ferry ports at Dover, Folkestone, Harwich, Ramsgate and Newhaven are all within 150 miles of Reading and are easily accessible from the west of London by either road or rail.
Excellent local transport connections allow easy travel from the Chilterns to London and the south-east of England. Many commute to work in the capital or take advantage of cheaper hotel accommodation to be found there. The local bus and train services reflect this demand, but make travel easy for visitors at all times.
Local trains are excellent. Most towns in the area and along the Thames have railway stations. There are frequent Turbo trains on the Wycombe and Aylesbury to London Marylebone line. The London Underground has tube stations as far west as Richmond, Slough and Amersham.
Major motorways serve the area, the M3, M4, M25 & M40 link drivers to London, Oxford, the Midlands, Birmingham and south Wales.
