Various transport options are available for travel to this part of south-west Scotland. With ports at Stranraer and Cairnryan for ferries between Scotland and Ireland, links to UK major motorways and an extensive rail network, the Dumfries and Galloway area is easy to get to from England and Ireland.
To fly to Dumfries and Galloway from Europe or the USA, the airports at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Prestwick are all within 2 hours drive. Manchester Airport is approximately 3 hours drive to the south.
Rosyth is the closest port for ferries between Scotland and Europe. An alternative is to sail to the northern English ports. Newcastle, about a 2 hours 30 mins drive, has ferries to Norway and Holland while Hull, a 4 hour drive from Dumfries and Galloway, has ferries to Zeebrugge or Rotterham.
Travelling by train or bus, this part of Scotland is well served by all forms of public transport.
For driving to Dumfries, the A74 and A75 trunk roads link directly to the M6 into England.
