The Glasgow, Strathclyde and Lanarkshire area has a top class road and motorway system, linking with all of Scotland and the UK. The M74 north - south motorway to Glasgow gives quick, easy access to the entire region, passing Larkhall, Hamilton and the A74 to Kilmarnock, Ardrossan, Ayr and Prestwick. The A8 and M8 link Greenock on the west coast to Edinburgh on the west via Glasgow, Erskine, Paisley and Coatbridge.

While the roads into the main cities and towns are good for driving, in more remote areas there are many single track roads where you need to give way to oncoming traffic when necessary. There are many clearly marked scenic national tourist routes (NTRs). Signs for NTRs have distinctive white lettering on a brown background with a white thistle logo. Specific attractions are indicated by a 'blue thistle' signpost.
