When rail services run to schedule, the Lancashire area has excellent Intercity and local train services. Planned upgrades and maintenance on the west coast mainline have been held up. Delays are frequent so remember to check before you leave to catch a train.

Arriva Trains Northern run local services within the north of England, including Blackpool, Preston and Lancaster as well as between the east and west coasts via the Trans-Pennine Express route.

First North Western trains also provide services throughout the north west of England and north Wales.

The Isle of Man has various train lines of historical interest including Groudle Glen Railway with steam trains, Manx Electric Railway and the Snaefell Mountain Railway.
