Over the last 30 years, many services have moved away from Stranraer. In the 1970's P&O moved operations to the more modern terminal in Cairnryan, around five miles away, at the mouth of Loch Ryan. In 2000 the Seacat fast service to Belfast was relocated in Troon.
Stena are also proposing to move the remainder of services to a new custom built port to the north of Cairnryan. Until then Stranraer still remains an important port with up to eight dauly crossings into Northern Ireland.
Facilities at Stranraer include a 24 hour snack bar (excluding Saturday and Sunday nights), vending machines, and a convenience store.
