The main London to Edinburgh line passes along the eastern edge of the The Dales area, some 16 miles from Richmond, offering excellent intercity services to London plus Transpennine Express trains to Manchester and the rest of the UK.
Although the UK rail network will bring travellers within easy reach of The Dales area there is little or no rail coverage within the area itself apart from the newly re-opened Wensleydale line from Leeming Bar to Leyburn.
For the north part of the Yorkshire Dales, the closest mainline train stations are at Northallerton and Thirsk, both lying within 20 miles of Richmond and Leyburn. Northallerton and Thirsk are on the main London to Edinburgh line. Local bus services provide onwards transport into the Dales National Park. The south Dales lie on the fringe of the Leeds Metro System. Ilkley, Keighley and Skipton are all within a 50 minute train journey of Leeds.
