Ayr Backpackers is a working backpacker hostel where you can stay with a typical Australian family in a warm and friendly environment.

We provide clean, comfortable and safe dormitory style accommodation in Queenslander Hostels, as well as provide jobs and transport to a variety of farms and local businesses.

Ayr Backpackers is only a two minute walk to supermarkets and a five minute walk to town, where you can find an array of modern retail shops, banks, hotels, cafes, restaurants, bowling, laundromats and the recently renovated cinema.

Ayr has a continual fruit picking season of at least 8 months - April to December and is one the the biggest can farming areas of Australia, as well as one of the largest mango producing areas. We also farm lots of Italian vegetables -: tomatoes, chillies, cucumbers, eggplants, zucchinis, squash, capsicums, pumpkins, rockmelons and watermelons. If you are interested in applying for a 2nd working holiday visa, Ayr is the place to be.

Further Information: Farm work can be hard and dirty. The positives are that you will get fit, make great friends and get paid for the service. The rate of pay is around $17 per hour. Workers will need-: broadbrim hat, enclosed shoes, old clothes, suncreen, water bottles, lunch and morning tea, Australian Bank Account (can be arranged in Ayr), Australian Tax File Number (can be arranged in Ayr), current Australian Working Visa and a willingness to work.
Getting There: Ayr is in North Queensland approx 88km south of Townsville and 100km north of Bowen on the Bruce Highway. Both the Greyhound and Premier Coach lines travel through Ayr several times a day as they travel the Australian East Coast. For those coming from interstate the option of flying to Townsville and busing to Ayr is a better option. Ayr is also accessible via Queensland Rail. Ayr Backpackers is a short walk from the bus stop (just around the corner from Coles Supermarket), but if you call us when you arrive we will pick you up.
