With its impressive edifice soaring into the Melbourne skyline, the Westgate Bridge boasts a proud and also tragic part of Victorian history. Known as one of Australia's biggest cable-stayed girder bridges, its mighty 850 metre length soars high over the banks of the Yarra River.
Before the bridge, access to the city was by travelling the old Geelong Road. The advent of the bridge saw a reduction in congestion and a much need link with the city and Melbourne's western suburbs and with Geelong.
On the 15th of October 1970 tragedy struck when the span between piers 10 and 11 collapsed into the water below, killing thirty-five construction workers. The West Gate Bridge Memorial was constructed near the bridge in memory of the men who lost their lives.
