St Kilda Railway Station was built in 1857 and is officially the oldest surviving railway station building in Victoria. The railway station was the terminus of the St Kilda Line, turning the area into a 'day trip' location for Melbournites.
Due to economic pressure, St Kilda Railway Station no longer operates as a train station. The last trains ran to St Kilda in August 1987. The building is currently used as retail premises and despite protests from the National Trust of Australia the station building was converted into a number of different shops.
