The rare Julia Creek Dunnart (Sminthopis Douglasi) is found in the Mitchell grass downs of north west Queensland. There are currently eleven known locations where the insect eating marsupial regularly habituates, all located within 100km of Julia Creek. The shyness of the dunnart led residents to believe that it was extinct until 1992. However in captivity they have proved to be avid breeders, but high number for ferial cats in the area has attributed to declining numbers in the wild.
The average measurement of the Julia Creek dunnart is 230mm, with the tail accounting for almost half the entire measurement.
