Located in the picturesque Kangaroo Valley, with its deep, sheer sided ravine, the famous sandstone Hampden Bridge is Australia's oldest suspension bridge. Built in the 1890's, it crosses the Kangaroo River on Cambewarra Road. The bridge is a highly attractive and highly distinctive structure. Magnificent castellated sandstone towers form a gateway to the Kangaroo Valley township. The structural properties of the bridge are readily visible and interpretable from deck level and from public spaces provided to each side of the bridge and in the gully below. The movement of the deck and cables as heavy traffic passes across the bridge is a distinctive experience for drivers, pedestrians and observers.
