Formerly named Lumholtz National Park, Girringun National Park is one of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area's national parks, and is a gazetted World Heritage site. The park is formed on part of the traditional lands of the Warrgamaygan Aboriginal people, Nginba Warrgamaygan Ngarji. The 1,240 square kilometre national park consists mainly of wet sclerophyll forests, but small pockets of rainforest also exists along the eastern slopes and hilltops. The Seaview, George and Cardwell ranges dominate the landscape, which is strewn with granite debris from a volcanic eruption 100,000 years ago. The highest sheer drop waterfall in Australia, Wallaman Falls is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and home to some of the oldest rainforests on Earth and many rare plants and animals. The creeks and rivers are home to platypus, eastern water dragons and saw-shelled turtles. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the reclusive musky rat-kangaroo or the endangered southern cassowary.
