Man made and completed in 1973, Lake William Hovell is formed by a dam on the King River. Set in mountain bushland and on the edge of the Alpine National Park, the lake provides excellent fishing, boating and picnic facilities.
The northern boundary of the King River passes Mounts Buggery, Speculation and Koonika, flowing through to Burnt Top. The boundary then travels almost due north to Mount Typo, and subsequently north-west in to Lake William Hovell. The dam also supplies water for irrigated crops, vineyards and farmyards from Cheshunt to Wangaratta.
Boat (restricted to engines of 8 kW or less and a maximum speed of 8km/h), camp at King River Camp at Cheshunt, canoe or swim at the lake. Nearby, bush walking is popular.
