This followed on from the work of Maudie Palmer who, as curator of the Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park, established the permanent collection of art works on the island and ran art exhibitions in the renovated scout hall.
In 2011 the exhibiting groups are the Association of Sculptors of Victoria, Ceramics Victoria, the Contemporary Art Society of Victoria Inc., the Photography Studies College (Melbourne) and the Basketmakers of Victoria.
There will also be a special program of events on Australia Day including a tour of the island and its permanent collection run by the Friends of Herring Island and arts demonstrations in the gallery courtyard.

- Further Information
- Visiting the island is an adventure in itself in that access is across the Yarra River - most comfortably using Parks Victoria's punt service. There is a AUD2/adult charge for the punt. The gallery is open and the punt operating only on weekends, Australia Day, Labour Day, Easter Monday and Anzac Day. There is coffee available at the cafe near Como landing. The landing is adjacent to the Capital City bike trail and some cycle parking is available near the landing.
