Englebrecht Cave is a vast complex of limestone caves under the city of Mt Gambier. One of the Limestone Coast's most fascinating sites, it's regularly explored by experienced cave divers.

45 minute guided tours are offered into 2 of the chambers where divers enter the water to dive under the city. Tours give insight into how the caves were formed, and explains how the underground water filters into the caves.

First explored in 1884, maps showing the extent of this underground system are available.

Details

History
Carl Engelbrecht, a German emigrant, purchased Dr Wehl's old flour mill in 1885 and converted it into a whiskey distillery. Mr Engelbrecht used the cave for dumping of waste and bottles. There is still evidence of broken bottles today.
