Dartmoor National Park is situated in Devon, Southwest England. The 32.5 mile drive from Yelverton to Exeter, through the national park consists of miles of rolling moorland, stunning scenery and a wealth of historic sites.
From Yelverton, take the B3212 east toward Dousland, follow signs for Binkham Hill and in just over 5 miles you will come across the highest town on the moor.
Princetown is home to the famous Dartmoor Prison, which is on the main road that runs through the town. The prison is reckoned in Victorian times to be the hardest and most severe in England, and has been in constant use from 1850 to the present day.
Two Bridges is an isolated place in Dartmoor just 3 minutes drive from Princetown. The name came from when the road crossed both the West Dart and the Cowsic River, just upstream from the point where they meet, and required two separate bridges.
Carry on the B3212, you will reach a turning for Lakeland village, just passed this turning, you will see a track on your right, which will lead you to the Bronze Age settlement with other prehistoric monuments nearby.
Back to the main road, drive for another 10 minutes passing some stunning landscapes, and you will come across the ancient market town of Moretonhampstead situated on the edge of the National Park. It sits in the shelter of hills on three sides and the beautiful Wray valley on the fourth.
Just under 6 miles away is Dunsford, a picturesque village in the Teign Valley, home to many old thatched cob cottages. The Dunsford nature reserve consists of 57 hectares or river valley woodland, rocky slopes and flood-plain scrub and grassland, famous for its six species of fritillary butterfly. Back on the B3212 travel for another 8 miles and you will reach the university city of Exeter.
