Held at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney, The Archibald Prize has been awarded to some of Australia's most important artists since it began in 1921. Despite attracting criticism in recent years for being more about celebrity and gossip than art, it remains the oldest and most prestigious art award in Australia.

Artists to receive the honor of winning The Archibald Prize over the past 90 years include such great's as George Lambert, William Dobell and Brett Whiteley.

The Wynne Prize is awarded to the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture, by an Australian artist. The Sir John Sulman Prize is awarded for the best subject painting or genre painting or mural project by an Australian artist.
