Located 440kms south-west of Alice Springs in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Uluru/Ayers Rock is Australia's most recognisable icon. The imposing sandstone monolith stands 348 metres high, rising out of the broad plain desert of central Australia.
The official joint name of Uluru/Ayers Rock recognises the traditional Aboriginal name, as well as the English name for the landmark. Uluru has great spiritual and cultural significance for the Aboriginal people of the area. Climbing of the rock by visitors is discouraged by the Aboriginal landowners, and photographing of certain sections of the site is forbidden for this reason too.
Uluru is listed as a World Heritage site, and its integrity is maintained by strict laws governing tourism activity in the area. Nowadays all tourist accommodation is located outside of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, at a purpose built resort at Yulara, approximately 15kms from Uluru.
