Owners Christine & John welcome you to Barnacles - the friendly backpackers at the top of the Whitsundays 1hrs drive north of Airlie Beach. Christine and John will give you honest and reliable work information and assist you in finding employment in the nearby farms ie fruit picking or sorting and packing in the sheds. Barnacles provides a courtesy bus service to and from your employment. Barnacles Backpackers is a hostel located on a quiet residential street near the centre of town. Catering to travellers on a working holiday, the hostel has the usual facilities including Internet access, laundry TV lounge, large communal kitchen DVD library etc. Some of the doubles/twins have air con and all have bar fridges. We also have an air con 4 bed dorm with an ensuite, fridge and TV, and 6 and 3 bed air con dorms with fridges. When not working enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches where you can swim snorkel and see coral reef fish within metres of the shore. We stay open all year round.

Getting There: Greyhound and Premier buses have services into Bowen daily. If catching a train to Bowen, a taxi will meet you at the station and drive you to Barnacles at no extra cost. Alternatively, you can fly into Proserpine and catch a taxi into Airlie Beach or Prosperine CBD where you can catch a prebooked coach up to Bowen. You can also fly into Townsville or Mackay and connect with a coach for your journey south to Bowen.
Please Note: Farm work is sometimes tedious and boring and if you are working outside; hot and dusty. You need to dress appropriately if working outside with hat, sunscreen, covered footwear and a long sleeve shirt is a good idea. You must make sure you have lots of water. Sheds require you to wear covered footwear, no jewellery and short fingernails. NO IPODS ARE ALLOWED due to working around machinery. Farmwork depends on two things, weather and prices. There are never any guarantees because no one has control of the above two things. But you will meet lifelong friends and take away memorable experiences with you
