Gum San commemorates the founding of Ararat by Chinese Miners in 1857. It is an interactive centre with fun for all of the family. Learn about Ararat's rich history and at the same time have fun writing your name in Chinese characters with traditional brush and ink.

Discover the fun and delight of gold panning, listen to, view and relive the gold fields way of life. Try your hand at calligraphy, learn about the Chinese language and view the relics, life like sculptured characters and authentic artefacts including Chinese dragons and costumes. Involve yourself with the Courthouse story telling room and admire the mining tunnel uncovered during construction. A true experience for visitors of all ages.

Located just 2.5 hours from Melbourne and 1 hour from other major regional cities, Ararat is an ideal base for exploring the regions wealth of attractions. Ararat is also the gateway to the spectacular Grampians National Park and Grampians Wine Region.

Special Events: ARARAT CHINESE RACING FESTIVAL Horses Heritage, Culture and Cuisine AUSTRALIA-CHINA BOWL DAY In November 2005 Wimmera Racing Club will stage the annual Australia-China Racing Festival focusing on Ararat's historic and cultural links with the Chinese community. The race meeting will be on Sunday 13 November and is Australia's only designated Chinese race meeting. The feature race will be the Australia-China Bowl an open race over 1,600 metres. Other feature races include the Gum San Heritage Centre Plate and the Victorian Centre of Wine Excellence Stakes. The day will feature Chinese food stalls and Grampians wines. Marquee and Yum Cha packages are also available. A race day with a difference.
