1.3 million square kilometres / 521,000 square miles... Alice Springs School of the Air was established in 1951 to provide a much needed education resource to children living in remote Central Australia; at the time it was the only one of its kind in the world and HF radio was the mode of communication for school lessons.
Students study at home with a home tutor and join with a teacher for regular live class lessons nowadays broadcast via satellite from the studio in Alice Springs which visitors may view from the visitor centre (Outside school hours and at times of no live classes being broadcast, recorded lessons are screened for visitor viewing).
Join with one of our guides for a presentation about the history and operation of the school taking you on a virtual journey of education in outback Australia from the early to the present days.
