Franklin House is a Georgian house built in 1838 for Britton Jones, a Launceston brewer and innkeeper. All the interior woodwork is Australian cedar. The house is a fine example of domestic architecture of the period, and at one time it was used as a school for boys.
The National Trust has restored and furnished the house and recreated the original Georgian family home. There is a magnificent garden behind the house, including two oak trees planted when the home was built along with a strawberry tree and a horse chesnut, all listed on the Significant Tree register for Tasmania.
From early September spring bulbs form a colourful carpet throughout the gardens; in November and February the inner garden features old fashioned roses. Morning and afternoon teas are served and the gift shop sells souvenirs; groups can be catered for, with advance notice.
