The objective was to create a mural for the community of Gulargambone to be displayed in the shop windows of the main street in the town centre. The theme of the mural is a day in Gulargambone. Starting in the twilight, through the dawn, morning, and the heat of the day, moving on to evening, nightfall, and a new dawn. The Castlereagh River runs through the entire mural, in drought and in flood.

The idea for the mural project came from discussions between the then Shire Development Officer Emily Harrison and the Gulargambone Flying Ahead Committee. Gulargambone Mural has been funded by Regional Arts New South Wales, which has involved local artists, Gulargambone Central School students, the local community and Indigenous groups.

The mural was officially opened in December 2002, at Gulargambone.
