The museum is housed in one of Hobarts earliest Colonial Homes (1836). It has a nationally significant collection of furniture, china, silver, paintings and examples of fine arts.
It was originally established in 1957 as Australias first folk museum, and has now perhaps a more comprehensive collection of nineteenth century items than any other house museum in Australia.
The building is a classic example of Georgian architecture. It is set in large grounds and garden three or four minutes walk from Salamanca Place.
