The Obelisk is a 40ft shipping marker set on Cape Dombey, Robe, 100ft above sea level.
Erected in the 1850's, the obelisk (originally painted all white) was used by mariners to navigate into Guichen Bay. It later assisted ships with navigation, visible 20km out to sea.
In 1862, after complaints by Captains that the then white Obelisk was difficult to differentiate from Long Beach's white sand hills, it was repainted in alternate red and white bands.
