Although there has been a civic collection in Albury since 1947 the gallery on the present site only opened in 1981. The previous Albury Town Hall built in 1908 was transformed over a three-year interlude into the Albury Regional Art Centre as it was then known.
The Art Gallery is an arm of Albury City Council and is funded by that Council, with assistance from the NSW Ministry for the Arts some federal funding on a project basis and private sponsorship.
At present there is a proposal to develop a Cultural Precinct, which would contain the Art Gallery, the Regional Museum and the Albury Library on QE II Square.
