Today's vineyards represent "the best of the best" of the original plantings. They are mature vines, low yielding, carefully selected clones on well drained soils enabling them to cope with the often wet vintage conditions which often occur in the Hunter Valley.
We have also invested heavily in the "best of the best". Tony "straw hat man" Merta, our vineyard manager has split the property of 147 Ha into 53 blocks to allow us to achieve the best quality and flavours from the various soil varieties within the vineyard. Soils are mainly red/brown crumbly friable clay loams over tighter clay below promoting good healthy root growth; at depth we have a base of sandstone and white shale.
