This was the home of Captain Samuel Mitchell, mine manager and geologist for the Geraldine lead mine (the first lead producer in Australia).
Today's Chiverton House Museum's caretakers cottage was the home of George White, a 'ticket of leave' convict, who in 1865 paid five pounds sterling for his piece of land on which he built the two room cottage and set up his wheel wright business.
Samual Mitchell arrived on the 'Zephyr' in November 1867 with his brother John and 8 miners to take up a three year appointment as Mining Engineer at the Geraldine Lead Mine nearby at the Murchison River. In 1868 he became the new owner of George White's little cottage and extended it to become today's Chiverton House.
This fine building constructed of local stone between 1868 and 1875 houses countless historical items from old butterchurns to old bibles. A newly constructed machinery shed preserves old farming implements and machinery together with a range of vintage vehicles.
