Connells Lagoon Conservation Reserve is the only Australian reserve to primarily conserve the Mitchell Grassland communities. In the north the shallow watercourses and occasional gravel rises break the extremely flat landscape. Flora & Fauna The reserve is home to 189 species of plants, 9 mammal species such as the Red Kangaroo, the Longtailed Planigale, several native rodents and the Dingo , 53 bird species including the endangered Bronzing Pigeon, Pictorella Mannikin Finch, Red-chested Button-quail and the Australian Bustard and 19 reptile species were also recorded in and near the Reserve.

Dominated by Mitchell Grass the reserves trees are found only in the watercourses and flood out areas with Bluebush dominating the wettest areas.
