Experience the rich history of Gundagai by visiting three monumental bridges. The historic bridges are Prince Alfred Bridge, Sheahan Bridge, Railway Bridge and Viaduct.
Prince Alfred Bridge is 921 metres in length and was completed in 1867. The original viaduct was replaced by the present one in 1896. The iron truss bridge, was until 1932 (when the Sydney Harbour Bridge was completed), the longest bridge in New South Wales.
Sheahan Bridge is 1143 metres long and was built and opened in 1977 as a by-pass for the Hume Highway. It replaced the Prince Alfred bridge as the crossing of the Murrumbidgee River and is the second longest bridge in Australia after the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The viaduct beneath Railway Bridge is 819.4 metres long and was completed in 1902. The timber truss Viaduct is the longest of its kind ever built in Australia.
