Mount Schank State Heritage Area, declared on 11 June 1992, is a striking volcanic landscape located just 12.5km from Mount Gambier.
One of Australia's dormant volcanoes, the cone shaped landform has remained relatively undisturbed thanks to little urban development.
Mount Schank volcano consists of 2 dry craters - the northern is 300m in diameter, while the smaller southern crater is only 200m in diameter and partially overlapped by the larger one.
Eruptions were explosive with pyroclastic flows and lava flows. Dormant but not extinct, future eruptions are possible at the volcano.
