Calthorpes' House is a window into an almost forgotten world. Calthorpes' House is a 1927 building fully restored with original furnishings of the 1920's turned museum. Amongst its memorabilia it has household gadgets and appliances across the century, costumery, toys, a pianola, and an authentic laundry with copper and wringer and view toys and souvenirs from the 1914-18 war.
Every guided tour is a unique experience. The guides will lead you back to the time when Harry and Dell Calthorpe and their two daughters Del and Dawn lived in the house. Weekend afternoon openings offer a less formal viewing of the house.
Whether you choose to visit during the week or on the weekend, explore the garden and be sure to enter the air raid shelter at the back of the property - it is a sombre reminder that Canberrans feared attack during World War Two.
