For over 40 years people have flocked to Vlado's, from celebrities to AFL stars, to everyday folk. The menu is fixed and the wine list short and sweet. Nothing distracts from the real focus - the choice of meat cuts (you can choose between the raw fillet, porterhouse and rump steaks) and it's cooking. For Vlado, his business is not a job, it's his passion, and this comes across very clearly.

The secret is in the perfect charcoal fire, which takes many hours of preparation each before reaching the perfect cooking state. This job has been the pride of one man, Steve (armed with a face guard and protective gloves and overalls) since he travelled from Croatia with Vlado as a young man.

If there's room after the sausages, mixed grill, steak of choice and salad, strawberry pancakes await and will provide the perfect end to a fantastic meal.

When asked about the key to his success, Vlado explained " the meat is grass-fed, Victorian beef, grass-fed but I would not be able to tell you from which part of Victoria or which breed. It's not important, the most important is that the animal is in its prime when slaughtered. The animal must not be run down, and must be slaughtered in the right conditions. If it is brought up in good conditions and slaughtered properly, without any excitement, then the meat is settled".
