As South Australia's first mainland settlement, Glenelg holds a special place in South Australia's history.
The Old Gum Tree in Glenelg was chosen by Governor Hindmarsh as a backdrop against which he read the proclamation that formally established the new province of South Australia on 28 December 1836.
