Victorian Goldfields Railway

Running through the Goldfields of Central Victoria, the Victorian Goldfields Railway brings to you the experience of Steam Railway Travel. Linking the historic towns of Castlemaine and Maldon, your train takes you through Box-Iron Bark forest in a region that saw some of the richest gold mining in Australia.

Trains are hauled by Steam Locomotive except on days of Total Fire Ban in the North Western Fire Region, or on advertised special occasions when a Diesel Locomotive or Diesel Rail Motor will be used. Trains operate on a set timetable between Castlemaine, Muckleford and Maldon. They also operate for group bookings and special events such as Friends of Thomas.

For a great fun day for the young and young at heart, participate in the next Friends of Thomas day. Meet 'Sir Topham Hatt, the Fat Controller', Steam Engines 'Kevin' & see 'Jeremy' up-on-blocks having his tired wheels repaired, Diesel Friends 'Daphne' & 'Freddy', the 'Coach Friends', and little 'Sebastian - the Trolley'.

The Victorian Goldfields Railway also offers you the opportunity to drive a steam locomotive. The VGR Driver Experience Course is for those who enjoy the sights and sounds of a steam locomotive. You need no previous railway knowledge or experience - we will teach you the basics of driving a steam locomotive. If you are over 21 and of reasonable health and fitness - this experience is for you.
