Summerland House With No Steps is an organization predominately for the training of the disabled in vocational and independent living skills. Located in the heart of the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, it is easily accessible by car and coach tours are most welcome.
The founder, Lionel Watts, contracted poliomyelitis, an illness that resulted in him becoming a quadriplegic. After a long recovery from the acute illness, Lionel tried to find a rehabilitation program, which would enable him to re-enter the workforce. None was available. So began the 'Houses With No Steps'
There is now an orchard of some 5,000 macadamia trees and 3,500 avocados. Farm related activities include fruit packing, macadamia de-husking and carton assembly. Currently these activities provide employment for 65 disabled, which is very pleasing.
Tourism activities have been developed including a restaurant, nursery, gift shop, children's playground and extensive gardens. Swings and slippery dips are all under shade sails thus making the tranquil surroundings and magnificent gardens a fun, safe place to bring whole family where they can all relax. The nursery has an extensive range of all your Nursery requirements such as pots, indoor and outdoor plants, statues and many more garden accessories.
Summerland House With No Steps is open seven days a week, including public holidays.
