Pembroke has one of the largest castles in Wales. Despite its size and appearance it was not a royal castle but the possesion of a private lord - his residence and the administrative centre of his territories.
Pembroke Castle is a stone keep and bailey fortress, built on a very strong site. The inner bailey has a great cylindrical keep flanking the inner gate-tower and the outer bailey has strong round flanking towers and a remarkable gatehouse.
Pembroke Castle occupies a strong position high on a ridge between two tidal inlets. Its fortifications were continually extended throughout its history and it displays stonework from many periods.
