Set within a magnificent deer park and originally a Tudor house, Lyme was transformed by the Venetian architect Leoni into a huge Italianate palace. The exterior is a splendid example of the Palladian style and yet some of the Elizabethan rooms survive within, making a fascinating contrast with the 18th-century saloon and rococo decoration. Of particular interest among the contents are beautiful Mortlake tapestries, Grinling Gibbons' wood carvings and an important collection of clocks.
