Sitting dramatically on a hillside overlooking Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle was once Scotland's biggest castle and remains one of the countries most celebrated landmarks. Its thousand-year history is turbulent to say the least with the castle being captured, destroyed and rebuilt on a regular basis. The five story tower is the most impressive of the remains enjoying the finest views of the Loch, but wander anywhere around the extensive grounds and you will feel history engulfing you.
The castle's history and that of the noble families who held it, is told in the exhibition display in the new visitor centre. The visitor centre contains an interpretation area, audio-visual presentation and an outstanding array of medieval artefacts found at the castle.
Visitors can enjoy local Scottish produce in the Urquhart Castle Cafe and visit the shop with its local crafts. Stunning views of the loch can be obtained from visitor centre veranda.
