Fort George is considered one of the most outstanding artillery fortifications in Europe.
Fort George was built between 1748 and 1769 by George II, to help suppress the Highlanders after the Battle Of Culloden, although this huge fort who's ramparts measure a mile in total never saw a shot fired in anger. The former lieutenant's governers residence now house's the Queen's Own Highlanders Regimental Museum. with a superb variety of medals uniforms and pictures of this legendary regiment who barracked here until the 1960's.
Due the the vastness of the fort make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore it thoroughly.
