Situated deep in the heart of Hastings West Hill lies the Smugglers adventure, acres of caverns that conceal Hastings thrilling history of smugglers, bootleggers and warring gangs.
The Smugglers Adventure is an amazing themed experience where you will learn about the fascinating and often bloody existence of the smuggler. More than 70 life sized figures, dramatic lighting, eerie sounds and a few surprises bring this bygone age to life.
The adventure begins at the monks walk. The tunnel leads down to a labyrinth of subterranean caverns and passages where in the old days; we used to hide goods we'd smuggled across the channel. This remarkable feat of engineering is 140 feet long (44 metres) and slopes in a steady gradient from the upper to the lower cavern.
The caves have been an attraction since Victorian times and on the 22nd February 1864 the caves had a royal visit from the Prince and Princess of Wales. In 1940 the caves became an air raid shelter, a temporary home for 600 people.
