This historic Cistercian abbey was founded in 1131, in the beautiful Wye Valley. The remarkably complete abbey church was rebuilt in the later 13th and early 14th centuries, and boasts extensive remains of the cloister and associated monastic buildings to this day.
Tintern Abbey provided inspiration for countless artists and literary figures, the most famous among these being J.W. Turner and William Wordsworth, who both featured this beautiful ruin in their work.
You can enjoy an on site exhibition and audio tour of the abbey, which is under the care of Cadw, an organisation also known as Heritage in Wales. Established in 1984 with responsibility for protecting, conserving, and promoting an appreciation of the historic environment of Wales, a number of the country's most important heritage sites are under Cadw's auspices, and membership subscriptions go a long way to conserve and protect some of the nation's most important built heritage.
