The present Cathedral has stood on this spot as a place of prayer and pilgrimage for over 900 years. It contains the remains of Cuthbert, the saintly seventh-century bishop of Lindisfarne; it also holds the tomb of Bede, the chronicler of Cuthbert's life and the first English historian. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in England (Bill Bryson called it 'the best Cathedral on planet earth'), and part of a World Heritage Site.

There is a remarkable number of services, concerts, exhibitions, conferences, meetings, tours, and visits at Durham Cathedral month by month.

On your visit you can catch a glimpse of some of the great treasures which the Cathedral houses. And you can hear something about the great musical tradition which is continued here by the choir and the splendid organ.

Further Information: Durham Cathedral Muniments date back to the late 11th century and form the largest archive to survive at any English cathedral. They are of exceptional importance for the medieval period, comprising original charters, many with their seals still attached, copies of documents issued in the name of the monastic cathedral chapter, numerous account-rolls and other estate documents.
