The Clock Tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, is one of the world's most recognisable landmarks and more commonly known as Big Ben. Big Ben is actually the name given to the bell that chimes the hours and which weighs over 13 ½ tons.

There are two theories as to how the bell got its name. The first suggests that it was taken from the nickname of a champion heavyweight boxer of the time called Ben Caunt. The second and more plausible explanation is, that it was named after the bulky Welshman Sir Benjamin Hall, the first commissioner of works from 1855 to 1858, whose name was inscribed on the bell.

UK residents can arrange a tour of Big Ben through their local MP, however overseas visitors cannot currently visit the tower. A guide will outline the history of the tower, the bell and how the most accurate public clock in the world works. Tours are free, but children under 12 are not permitted and visitors should feel confident in their health and fitness.
