The all-volunteer run Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway operates steam and heritage diesel trains through ten miles of glorious Cotswold countryside between Cheltenham Racecourse (AA signposted) and Toddington, near Broadway (Brown tourist signs).
The line captures the very essence of a country railway. The route was once part of the Stratford upon Avon to Cheltenham line built by the Great Western Railway a century ago and it has been painstakingly restored over the past 25 years.
From Cheltenham, the train passes offers spectacular views of Cleeve Hill, the highest point of the Cotswolds, and panoramic views towards the distant Malvern hills. It passes through the villages of Woodmancote, Gotherington and Gretton before plunging through the second-longest tunnel on a preserved railway before reaching Winchcombe station. This is where the railway's carriages and wagons are preserved. The picturesque station building itself was painstakingly moved from Monmouth Troy.
