Westminster Abbey is an architectural masterpiece and also presents a unique pageant of British history, as it contains the Confessor's Shrine, the tombs of Kings and Queens, and countless memorials to the important people. Westminster is a "royal peculiar" subject only to the sovereign and has housed every coronation since 1066 and today it is still a church dedicated to regular worship.
Verger-led tours of the Abbey are available for individuals or family groups only. They last for approximately 90 minutes and include a tour of the Shrine, the Royal Tombs, Poet's Corner, the Cloisters and the Nave, at a cost of £4.00 per person. Specialist tours can be accommodated during normal open hours and school and university groups are welcome to visit from September to June, with a teachers guide available to help plan your visit.
The Coffee Club operates two stalls at the Abbey, serving a range of drinks and snacks. A selection of souvenirs is available from the Abbey shop. The Abbey has a library and archives with a reading room open Mon-Fri by appointment only. The Abbey hosts a range of special events, including theological seminars, concerts and private events. The college garden was originally an infirmary garden and still houses a few medicinal plants today.
