Sir Walter Scott purchased the Cartley Hall farmhouse on the banks of the River Tweed in 1812, and renamed it Abbotsford.
The old house was entirely demolished in 1822, and rebuilt. Further extensions to the house were carried out after his death in 1832.
Scott was a passionate collector of historic relics, including an impressive collection of armour and weapons. The library contains over 9000 rare volumes.
Visitors will see his Study, Library, Chinese Drawing Room, Entrance Hall and Armoury, and the Dining Room where Sir Walter died on 21 September 1832. There are extensive gardens, including a wonderful walled garden, a woodland walk and a private chapel which was added after his death.
