Apart from the church, the gatehouse is all that is left of a 12th-century Augustinian priory, which was later strengthened following devastating raids by Robert the Bruce. The Dissolution of the Monasteries put an end to the priory in the mid-16th century. The gatehouse later served as a grammar school from 1624 to 1790.

The Gatehouse was closed during 2005 and is likely to remain so for at least part of 2006. For up-to-date information on access, visit the NT website or tel. property office. No WC
