The megalithic ruin known as Stonehenge is a magical, ancient ceremonial landscape of great archaeologic signifigance. It stands on the open downland of Salisbury Plain, 2 miles west of the town of Amesbury, Wiltshire, in Southern England. It is not a single structure but consists of a series of earth, timber, and stone structures that were revised and re-modelled over a period of more than 1400 years.
The National Trust owns 850 hectares land surrounding the famous monument, including The Avenue, King Barrows Ridge, Normanton Down Barrows and the Cursus, the latter variously interpreted as an ancient racecourse or processional way. Recent additions to the estate include Durrington Walls, and the Lesser Cursus on Greenlands Farm. All grassland areas on the estate are designated NT open access and are open to everyone, but on foot only.
Audio guide tours for the stone circle are available from the English heritage shop, and Stonehenge landscape guided walks, are on every Tuesday and Saturday from July to October.
Much of the estate is available for visitors to roam at leisure. Maps of accessible areas and a series of self guided walks leaflets, are available from the estate office. The estates grounds are partly accessible with, slopes, loose gravel, grass and uneven paths, undulating terrain and open countryside.
