Townend is situated three miles south of Ambleside and just a short distance from the picturesque village of Troutbeck.
Townend is an excellent example of Lake District vernacular architecture, built in the 17th century with solid stone and slate. The house belonged to a wealthy farming family and hosts a range of carved woodwork, books, papers, furniture and fascinating domestic implements from the past, largely accumulated by the Browne family - who lived here from 1626 to 1943.
